Old kimonos

During a recent trip to Japan, we found a number of old kimonos, which will be recycled and turned into fashion items at the Options! atelier.

The kimono is arguably the most traditional and iconic item of Japanese clothing. There are strict rules on how to wear and indeed put on a kimono. The robe is usually worn during family events and other official gatherings, like a wedding or tea ceremony. In order to keep the kimono tradition alive there are special courses that young Japanese girls can take so that they know that from December to May you should wear 2 layers and that starting June 1st 1 layer of clothing suffices. A traditional kimono is made of silk and a new kimono can cost as much as 60.000 Euro. The robes are usually handed down from mother to daughter and last about three generations.
